Darkest Hour is focused on WW2 in the Western theatre of war — especially on the Allied landings in Normandy in June 1944. Modding team started their work in the end of year 2006. First publicly available version was offered to community in June 2008. Game is playable on German, American, British and Canadian side.
The final update for Darkest Hour was published 16th of Deecmber 2011. This update means that officially Darkest Hour’s journey ends in version 5.1. The update brings some tweaks to game mechanics and official maps. Before that, in 6th of May 2011, a large update was released — that brought the game to version 5.0. Even this is the last update for the mod, developers might publish a patch to fix bugs and to tweak some minor aspects of the game. Game can be downloaded via Steam just like other modifications for Red Orchestra: Ostfront Ostfront 41–45. Version 5.0 introduced the following official maps: Bridgehead, Caen, Cambes-en-Plaine, Carentan Causeway, Gran, Hill 400, Kommerscheidt, Lutremange, Poteau Ambush, Simonskall and Vieux Recon. Many of these are combined arms maps.
The update on 17th of June 2010 (for 4.0) brought some bug fixes and changes, two new vehicles, which are M36 Jackson “Slugger” and Panzer III Ausf. N, and six new maps. Also game features now a possibility to climb over walls and other obstacles. On both sides officers can also throw colour smoke to set a rally point. Tripwire announced via it’s forum that Darkest Hour is the most popular modification for Red Orchestra. Game has amongst other levels these official maps:
This mod has a large developer team behind it. It has couple of project leaders, few lead developers and various helpers for animations, coding, level design etc.
